JSC Ingenium - News: JSC Ingenium strengthens its technological leadership thanks to Maestro de Red 5G
  • “The application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques is going to allow us to provide more compatibility to the Network, so that it becomes more agile, flexible and intelligent.”

Under the title “Maestro de Red 5G” the company is undertaking a new R&D project, approved by the Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico y la Innovación, E.P.E (CDTI), a certifying body under the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF 2021-2027).

The main objective of the project is to research and develop a complete and practical structure that leverages data analysis based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) solutions for network control, management and orchestration. At the same time, it bridges the gap between the business and technical domain by exposing the capabilities necessary for the business domain to create an instance, operate and modify network services and tenants.

This project includes the design of an overall architecture that is sustainable and energy efficient, to reduce environmental impact and reduce operational costs; the evolution of the current monitoring systems to accommodate the defined architecture; the enhancement and development of the current 5G core network prototype, allowing it to handle a larger data network; and the development of a new network architecture that will allow the enterprise domain to manage a larger data network.

“Maestro de Red 5G” is in line with the company’s strategy of devoting around 45% of its resources to R&D, which has provided it with cutting-edge technology capable of providing a solution to the daily and constant challenges faced by mobile operators wishing to compete and differentiate themselves in terms of value. This brings to five the number of R&D projects approved by CDTI in the last 15 years. “Our strong commitment to R&D has allowed us to achieve international recognition and opens doors for us to continue competing in a highly competitive and constantly evolving mobile market,” said José Manuel Losada, Chief Technology Officer of JSC Ingenium.

“One of the key challenges for operators as they embrace 5G is to improve network operations and maintenance. The concept of a single network for everything changes completely. The application of artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques will allow us to bring more compatibility to the network, so that the network becomes agile, flexible and intelligent to serve the business purpose, while enabling rapid service innovation and significantly reducing the time to market for mobile operators,” adds Losada.

Since its founding in 1998, the company has focused on the development of network infrastructure technology and services for mobile operators. In response to the challenges of a completely new environment defined by disruptive technologies such as cloud, microservices, network slicing and others, JSC Ingenium‘s vision is based on the deployment of ONE single converged and backward compatible network (3G, 4G and 5G). This solution is based on the principles of containerized networks, automation, resilience, self-healing and an OPEX model, making the platform more flexible and accessible to all types of operators.

New strategies for mobile operators in their approach to 5G

JSC Ingenium - News: JSC Ingenium introduces its new multi-technology 5G Core
  • Mobile network operators are forced to define their strategies to address 5G in view of the constant announcement of new tenders in the region.
  • JSC Ingenium is the challenger vendor of Core 5G standalone technology for mobile operators.

Despite the benefits and known improvements that 5G technology will bring in terms of productivity, efficiency, job creation, etc., the adoption of 5G in Latin America is slower than expected, being, according to GSMA Intelligence, well below the average of the main regions worldwide. However, it is important to note that in recent months we are experiencing a constant trickle of official announcements by local governments of new 5G radio frequency spectrum tenders in countries such as Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Peru, Guatemala or Panama, in addition to those of Chile, Brazil or the Dominican Republic, which were already operating in 2022, and thus begin to draw a different scenario, which will change dramatically in the coming months.

At the same time, it is important to point out that, according to the GSMA, 4G is still the most widely used mobile communications technology in Latin America today. It is expected to reach its peak in 2024, reaching 74% of total mobile connections, and it will not be until 2025 when it will begin its decline in favor of a greater role for 5G. This data indicates that there are still issues to be solved and services to be rolled out, such as VoLTE/IMS. The switch-off of legacy 2G and 3G networks will force the remaining mobile operators to deploy this new technology in order to continue offering voice calls on next-generation networks. By the end of 2022, only 46% of mobile networks worldwide had deployed VoLTE, in Latin America only more than 20%, well below the global average.

This poses a major challenge for mobile operators in the region who are aware that there are still things to do in 4G, and at the same time, they have to make a decision on how they will evolve their networks for the imminent arrival of 5G. Unlike the transition from 3G to 4G, the arrival of 5G in the region, beyond a change of standards, will mean a disruption: a new way of working and doing things; a change that will affect mobile operators at all levels – core, radio, IP backhaul -. That will force them, above all, to define and specify how they are going to evolve their networks. They will have to define their 5G deployment strategies and make important decisions that will affect not only the deployment of the new technology itself in the future, but also the way in which they approach other legacy technologies, such as VoLTE/IMS.

JSC Ingenium - Freddy Lara, Juan Carlos Buitrago, Alejandro Suaza
Freddy Lara, Juan Carlos Buitrago and Alejandro Suaza

Freddy Lara, MNO sales director of JSC Ingenium, talks about the company’s vision to face this great challenge and points out that “operators need to make these two scenarios compatible. Our company strategy in this regard is to carry out a 5G standalone deployment from the beginning, which is backward compatible, i.e. on the same network and on the same containerized deployment. The goal is that everything is managed in a unified way from the same Core, which is compatible with previous technologies, without the need for the operator to maintain two or even three networks in parallel”. Thus, in addition to the operational cost savings estimated at around 30% for the use of cloud-native technologies, there will also be cost savings in the operation and maintenance of the legacy networks themselves.

Lara adds “The competitive advantage of our value proposition is that it is based on a fully cloud-native solution, which operates on containers, and which will allow operators to have from the outset the capacity for adoption, implementation and customization of services necessary to manage them at the pace and speed demanded by the market”. The company is announcing the launch of its new 5G standalone in 2023 at a key moment when mobile operators must decide their future and is positioning itself as a 5G SA technology challenger vendor for mobile network operators in the region.

JSC Ingenium has been involved since its foundation in the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) sector and has extensive international experience with more than 100 MVNOs and more than 600 sub-brands deployed and operational today. In its new growth strategy, it is committed to expanding its reach to mobile network operators, without abandoning its focus on virtual operators, and is beginning to compete with large international telco vendors such as Ericsson, Nokia and Huawei, with cutting-edge technology and human resources.

The company recently announced the joining of a first-class team, for their experience and knowledge of telco operators, Freddy Lara as MNO Sales Manager and Alejandro Suaza as Presales Engineer, who join the team led by Juan Carlos Buitrago, who, based in Bogota, Colombia, will take care of all the company’s commercial operations in the region.

JSC Ingenium appoints Freddy Lara MNO Sales Director

JSC Ingenium - News: Freddy Lara - MNO Sales Director
  • With this new incorporation JSC Ingenium strengthens its sales team and creates a new division dedicated exclusively to Mobile Network Operators.
  • Freddy Lara will be directly responsible for the expansion into new market segments under the leadership of Juan Carlos Buitrago.

JSC Ingenium has appointed Freddy Lara as MNO Sales Director. With his entry into the company, a new sales division is formally created, dedicated exclusively to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to which it offers core solutions based entirely on the cloud, ready for the future and, at the same time, compatible with legacy networks.

Freddy Lara joins the JSC Ingenium team after a long career in the telecommunications industry, where he has held senior positions in companies such as Huawei, ZTE, ETB and Siemens. He holds a degree in Electronic Engineering – with a specialisation in Mobile Telecommunications Projects – from the Universidad Distrital Francisco José Caldas.

“I am very excited to start this new stage with a company as solid and with as much potential as JSC Ingenium. The innovation of its solutions and the flexibility with which it allows operators to implement them are, without a doubt, the best tools to help MNOs achieve their goals”, Lara says.

As sales responsible for MNOs, Freddy Lara will report to Juan Carlos Buitrago, recently promoted to Chief Sales Officer of JSC Ingenium after a successful career as Country Manager of SUMA Colombia. “We are proud to have a professional like Freddy Lara in our team. His experience and knowledge of the market are a guarantee for the development and expansion of the company”, Buitrago adds.
